I agree with HoleinOne...this is a very tough town/school system to administer. On the one hand, there are some affluent types who demand good schools. On the other hand, you have those who moan about taxes, hate the schools, etc. NOT an easy school system to govern. Despite all that controversy, Hopkinton does OK (though ranked below Holliston and Westboro in the latest Boston Mag schools assessment)...Phelan should be thanked for his service to the town and the students. But perhaps new blood will be good -- though good supers are a valuable commodity and the towns fight over them. In coming generations, it won't be so hard. Many are seeing that education is a great gig -- good pay and you only have to work part of the year, and THEN you get to retire at age 55 with 80% of your income for life, and an amazing healthplan. Where else can you get that today? So in 10 years, eager supers will be a dime a dozen. But now? Not so easy to find.
