Superintendents and administrators do NOT have part of the year off. The only educators that have "part of the year off" are teachers, who, because their pay is NOT enough, usually work part time jobs in the summer in addition to taking courses to improve their craft each year and working in the summer to improve curriculum. The amount of red tape and vilification that teachers and educators take is becoming more and more---though I hear that Hopkinton is more level headed about these issues than many districts. Trust me, it's a hard gig...not an easy gig. Spend a day with a teacher in town and see for yourself what an average day is like. I promise you, you'll be exhausted by 2:00pm! :-) I know for sure that with my work ethic and education level, I would make at least double what I make now in the private sector. But like most teachers, money isn't the motivating factor in my career choice. Phelan has done a wonderful job in the past 11 years. He changed this district from a very mediocre, entrenched system to a solid, well above average district. AND he did this while giving the tax payers a real bang for their buck. Check how much other school systems pay per student and you'll see for yourself. Stats are available on the DOE website. Hats off to him. It's a tough job and he has done well by us.
