Those who think they can double their pay by going to the private sector have a warped understanding of what the private sector pays and how hard it is to obtain and keep a job. There is no such thing as "tenure" in the private sector. If you've been teaching for 30 years, you're probably getting paid $80,000 or more and you can retire with a pension of 80% of that. Private sector employees can work for another 15 years, then get Social Security benefits. (I'm not saying teaching is an easy job. I know it's not.)
