October 31, 2006 — Matt Arner and wife Mini Singh claim to be the first documented home in Hopkinton to have installed photovoltaic solar panels on their roof to cut down on their electricity costs. Unlike solar panels that carry sun-heated water to a storage unit in the basement for transfer to domestic hot water or heat, these actually convert sunlight into electricity that is used in the home when needed, according to Mr. Arner, that will provide 30% of their electricity and pay for itself in 5 years. When the production of electricity from the roof units is greater than the demand, it will return electricity through the meter and run it backwards. Mr. Arner says that much of his costs of the installation are mitigated by rebates — for instance with the Mass Technology Collaborative — and tax credits issued by the state and federal governments, as well as credits he can sell that are purchased by residents wanting "green" electricity. |
